ParticipantOur ride this Saturday will take us on some of the less traveled roads from Macedonia south and east to Steubenville for lunch at the Naples Spaghetti House restaurant, a family run establishment that has been in business for nearly 100 years. We’re going to be taking Rte 14 most of the way to Salem before heading directly south across country to Augusta on Rte 9. From there we’ll ride cross country to Salineville, and then continue southeast on small country roads through the Brush Creek Wildlife Area described by the Ohio DNR as “deeply dissected terrain…composed of broad ridges with steep slopes which descend to the narrow valley floor of Brush Creek.” I’m still working on the final route, looking for the smallest paved roads that will take us through the area. I’ll be posting the gpx file on Wednesday or Thursday.
Meet at Bob Evans in Macedonia (Rte 8 and I-271) on Saturday, August 17 at 9 AM for breakfast. Ride departs promptly at 10 AM. Figure on a full day for this ride, getting back to the Cleveland area late afternoon.

ParticipantGood thing the Wednesday group and I rode the tentative route yesterday – we had an exciting time! Lots of gravel and a sharp right turn on an uphill that caused us to bail. It turns out the roads in the Brush Creek Wildlife Area are all gravel, so I did a lot of exploring on the way back and came up with a revised route that takes us into this remote area but keeps us on paved roads (except for a 100 yard stretch of resurfacing).
We’ll take I-480 and SR 14 and 45 down to Lisbon for a rest stop at McDonald’s. From there it’s SR 164 south to Salineville where we’ll turn off onto county and township roads eastward to Hammondsville, turn back southwest to near Bergholz, go south on State Park Mooretown Road to Richmond and on to the Naples Spaghetti House. These are delightful roads along ridge tops, up and down valleys with lots of hills and curves, and one stretch (T 218) of recently paved single lane through a heavily canopied area of the forest. The cool shade is a plus on these warm days.
The revised route for tomorrow, Steubenville via Lisbon, is available in the Extras section.
Hope to see you at Bobs Macedonia this Saturday.
