        UPDATED: 10/2/18

The Ride (see updated maps below)
This year’s ride will take us on some outstanding Appalachian roads within a 100-mile radius of Marietta Ohio. This area that is part of the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau, a particularly remote and rugged section of the Appalachians.

Friday we’ll ride to Zanesville for lunch at the Muddy Miser, and then tour the eastern section of the Hocking Hills before taking 550 East to Marietta. Saturday we’ll explore the area south and east of Parkersburg, WV, riding some of the best roads in the area as identified by Butler Maps. Sunday we’ll follow the Ohio River north east to Route 800, and take that all the way up to Uhrichsville and on back to Cleveland. For those of you who are working Friday, feel free to zip down to Marietta Friday evening and join us for the Saturday ride. I’ll be making reservations for a group dinner Saturday evening.

This will be an easier ride than last year, shorter with about 5 hours of riding per day, and the roads will be less curvy, at least on Friday and Sunday. Saturday in West Virginia the terrain will be more rugged and roads curvier, and we’ll be veering off on several small, twisty county roads just for fun (you can stay on the state highways if you choose), but all the roads will be paved.

I’ll be making Saturday night dinner reservations for us at Spagna’s in Marietta – they have great Italian food and a nice outdoor patio.

Friends, and riders on any make of bike, are welcome to join us.

        The Hotel
We’ll be staying at the Best Western at 701 Pike Street (across from the Quality Inn where we stayed last year). They are reserving a block of rooms for us at $69 per room (double occupancy). Call before October 1 (740 374-9660) to make your reservation and let them know you are with the Cleveland BMW Motorcycle Club. They provide a complimentary hot breakfast, have a bar and restaurant on site, and they have a good reputation with motorcycling groups.

        Departure
Meet at Bob Evans in Macedonia (I-271 and Route 8) at 9 AM on Friday, October 12. Come early for breakfast.

        Ride Roster (final)

Just  FYI – I called the Best Western in Marietta and apparently someone screwed-up the Group name for the block of rooms. They have us listed under Crestview Basketball Team.  The front desk clerk I spoke to (Brian) is working on fixing it.  It also would not accept my credit card information in the system, so I had to give it to him and he is “supposed” to email me a confirmation number. Hopefully, I don’t end up with $5000 worth of shit charged to my card.  I submit myself to the club as a scapegoat in the endeavor…

            Sandi 🙂

Sorry for the problem, Sandi. I just reserved a room and there didn’t seem to be any problem. I guess you got them straightened out!

Like I used to say at the end of a work day, “Nobody is bleeding or dead, so it’s all good”.

Have fun ya’ll.  California “crud” has me sidelined with sinus infection and bronchitis. Somebody take pictures!

We had a great time this past weekend riding the amazing roads in southern Ohio and northern West Virginia. The weather wasn’t optimal, but the roads were. We had a total of 24 bikes and 25 riders (see final roster in Post #1). The camaraderie, mutual support, and shared enthusiasm for motorcycling were something to behold.

A special thanks to Mike Sikora, Jerry Riha and Kurt Shreffler for leading groups of riders which made it possible for riders of different interests to ride together. Another special thank you to Dennis Owens for helping Keith find a towing service and getting his bike back to the hotel.

I’m already thinking of next year – all suggestions are welcome. The three day/two night format seemed to work well. I’m thinking about other possible destinations – maybe northwestern PA or northern WV. October seems to be a good time – it was perfect the last weekend of October last year, albeit a little less than perfect this year.

If you have photos of the weekend please send them to me and I’ll upload them as a group to the club website. I’ll also forward them to Don Poremski who is “thinking about” doing a write up for the next newsletter.
