I’m planning a Memorial Day Weekend ride into the heart of some of the best riding country east of the Mississippi. We’re staying in Huntington, WV at the Red Roof Inn on Friday, 5/24 and Sunday, 5/26. On Saturday, 5/25, we’ll head down to Hazard, KY, staying at the Quality Inn, 200 Dawahare Dr, Hazard, KY 41701. Staying Saturday in Hazard puts us closer to some very twisty roads in western VA.. Saturday, 5/25-exploring the roads skirting the KY/WV border down into the western tip of VA. Sunday, 5/26-headed back into OH to check out the roads around Athens. Heading home on Monday, 5/27. Plan on being back in Cleveland mid-late afternoon.

The Red Roof Inn-Huntington, 5190 US Route 60 East, Huntington, WV 25705 (304)733-3737 dbl. room=$69.99+tax. Tell them you’re with BMW Motorcycle Owners of Cleveland.

Everyone is welcome. If interested, please respond to this post or send me an email so I can get a head count. kkshreff@gmail.com

Stay tuned for some route tweeking by Mr. Kanczak.

The GPX files from routes created in Garmin Basecamp have been uploaded to this website as 2019 Memorial Day KY-VA Trip.gpx

Route 1 Huntington to Red River Gorge KY: 295 miles, ~7 HRS rolling time.

Route 2 Huntington to Interstate Breaks SP VA: 366 miles, ~9 HRS rolling time

Route 3 Big Stone Gap extension: loop to add another 118 miles to Route2, +~3.5 HRS rolling time. Rated extra-technical by Road Runner magazine!!

Will be curvy, will be narrow, will be fun!

Mary and I are considering this ride.  Do you have gpx files of the route?  Depending on the time you’re planning to leave we may need to meet the group down there, but not sure yet.

Okay, folks, change in plans. We’re staying in Huntington, WV at the Red Roof Inn on Friday, 5/24 and Sunday, 5/26. On Saturday, 5/25, we’ll head down to Hazard, KY, staying at the Quality Inn, 200 Dawahare Dr, Hazard, KY 41701 (606)436-0743. Here’s PlanB:
Day 1 Red Route: Huntington WV to Hazard KY: 260 miles, 6.5 hours rolling. Could do some site seeing in Red River Gorge area with this day.
Day 2 Blue Route: Hazard KY to Huntington WV: 365 miles, 10 hours rolling. Lot’s more fun in Big Stone Gap VA area.

The switch in hotels for Saturday night from Huntington,WV to Hazard,KY lets us spend more time in the serious twisties on the KY-VA border.

Day 2 is down graded from force of will to merely a long day!

                      160 is great!

I’d love to go but have prior obligations to the city of Green and their parade :'(

This is an awesome trip… I loved the Red River Gorge area, hopefully you can hit up 77 and the one-lane Nada tunnel through the mountain!!

Okay, here’s the departure plan. Meet at the BP station at Brookpark Road and Rocky River Drive by the airport on Friday 5/24 at 4:00 PM. If anyone is coming from the east side, we can meet up somewhere at a rest area on 71S. Please let me know if you plan on coming so I can get a head count.

I am a poor broke retired chick, otherwise I would have loved to have gone on this trip!  Have fun, and take lots of pictures!
