Nice find, Ed. I had to check it out…
I created a short route around my neighborhood on Google Maps, clicked on “Share or imbed map” and copied the link, went to Maps to GPX and pasted in the link and specified Route Points, which produced a GPX file. The GPX file consisted of via points at each of the turns in the route.
I copied the GPX file into my Garmin XT, but when I selected the route in Trip Planner the Garmin XT said it could not calculate the route. So I went into “Trip Options” and changed “Route Preference” from Straight Line to Shorter Distance. Now the Garmin could calculate the route and display it on the map. When riding the route the Garmin announced each of the via points but didn’t tell me I was supposed to turn or which direction to turn. When I went off route it would recalculate and show me how to get back on the route.
The Maps to GPX route file, with recalculation in my Garmin GPS, did create a route and display it on the map, and could recalculate it if I got off route, but the announcements at the via points did not tell me a turn was coming up, which way to turn, or whether I was off route. This GPX file, after Garmin’s recalculation, consisted of the original via points, plus (non-announcing) track points connecting the via points.
Ed, does your GPS tell you which way to turn? What GPS are you using? Was I doing something wrong that kept me from getting the turn-by-turn directions?
