When I toured Sardinia, the bike rental shop I used, sent me .GPX files that I used
on my phone with Google Maps. Worked Great. They had setup a route for me and Hotel reservations.
All was detailed in the .GPX files and took some curious routes (and Fun).

You can Use Google maps on a Desktop or Laptop to create the routes at https://www.google.com/maps/
AND if you believe you’ll be out of range of a good phone signal (so that you might NOT get Map data)
you can download map sections and store them on your phone for when you DO need them.
